Computing with Modernity

The provision of the latest laptops seems like a sacred task for the market today. Consumers demand that they have the best quality of products that money can buy. Even those who are of limited means are joining the revolution. It really is not on to ignore the latest laptops if you want to remain part of the mobile computing revolution. One can argue as to whether this is a good thing or bad thing but the reality is that the laptop is here to stay and people had better get used to it.
The latest laptops have becoming something of an obsession with the younger generation and the office class. If you use the underground train you can observe a number of people busy typing away on their laptops as if the limitations of the office no longer apply to their working life.

Of course because the latest laptops allow the user to store very personal information, they are open to abuse. For instance we have all heard of the horrifying stories of the clueless government officials who lose state secrets on the laptop. For those with criminal intents, the latest laptops have been able to trap them and convict them in a court of law. Yet still we love the latest laptops because the offer convenience and flexibility which we simply cannot avoid in modern life.
Students have embraced the latest laptops in the wake of the need to study from remote locations. This means that we are no longer limited by the restrictions of location if we want to achieve higher education. The latest laptops are just one of the tools that can aid us to pass our course. Technical proficiency is no longer a problem because the latest equipment is designed in such a way that even novice people can carry out the basic functions. There are also practical advantages in not having to walk around with a bulky computer all the time when you are doing academic research.
One might have thought that cost would restrict the use of the latest laptops but his has not been the case. There are a number of reasons for this anomaly. The first is that people now have increased disposable incomes so if they want to buy a laptop it will not destroy the family finances. On the other hand there are many financial institutions that are able to offer credit to anyone who wishes to buy the latest laptops on credit.  Event the seller themselves can offer this credit subject to a good credit report. In any case most laptops fall within the range of disposable income that people are willing to spend on modern technology on a one off basis.

Technology Review has rounded up a bunch of objects that it feels are design classics from the past 30 or so years and got a bunch of industrial designers to talk about them. And you've gotta admit they're right—on some of the candidates, at least. First up is the Polaroid SX-70, which dates back to 1972.
Polaroid's first fully automatic, motorized camera was an instant design classic. Detailed with tan leather, it folded into a rectangle the size of a paperback book. Andrew Logan, principal designer at Frog Design, admires it for the "immediacy of a favorable output." He explains: "Instead of waiting days to see if you took a good photo, you could take it again right away."
There's a gallery below, and after the jump you can vote for your favorite piece of shiny loveliness.
